The Red Fear

Mattel announces third Chinese toy recall | Reuters
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Toymaker Mattel Inc on Tuesday announced a third recall of Chinese-made toys, saying it would take back more than 800,000 units globally that contain impermissible" levels of lead.

Anyone else think this may be some sort of subversive preemptive germ warfare? I don't, but I wouldn't be surprised if that's on a Republican's platform in 2008. "A vote for Schmuckface is a vote AGAINST chinky toys!"

It will be interesting to see what kind of impact all of this has on the Wal-Mart economy. Toy recalls add expense, therefore China might not be the cheapest source for much longer. Also, all of those pesky saftey regulations that might be demanded of Chinese factories will raise the price of Chinese goods. Either way, I guess Colbert will be paying more than $2 for tube socks.

What? You mean they aren't building dirt cheap toys from the highest quality materials?
This is what happens when you teach people it's better to believe in what they want instead of what is. There are no magic solutions! Cheap toys are made from cheap materials! Lead is cheap! And it makes for really shiny paint! That's why we used to make paint out if it!
